Nestled in the heart of Zululand in KwaZulu-Natal, Babanango Game Reserve is a prime example of this burgeoning trend, providing a unique blend of bespoke accommodations, wildlife encounters, and sustainable tourism practices.

Nadia du Preez, the Guest Experience and Activities Manager at Babanango Game Reserve, notes that the glamping trend has gained significant momentum in South Africa, with domestic tourists particularly drawn to these alternatives to traditional accommodation options.

She adds that the increase in demand for glamping is positively impacting the domestic tourism market, encouraging local travel and promoting sustainable tourism practices.

What distinguishes Babanango Game Reserve from other glamping destinations is the variety of unique experiences it offers.

Here, guests can enjoy guided wilderness trails, thrilling ziplining adventures across gorges, and historical battlefield tours to sites like Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. The reserve provides conservation enthusiasts opportunities to participate in wildlife monitoring activities, while night drives offer extraordinary astral experiences, allowing guests to connect with nature in a truly magical way.

Babanango's commitment to sustainability also distinguishes it from other reserves. The lodges at the reserve incorporate eco-friendly materials, while water and energy conservation are priorities.  Emphasising the reserve's dedication to sustainable practices, du Preez says: "Our commitment to research-focused conservation, including being a designated WWF black rhino conservation site, ensures we stay at the forefront of sustainability. As glamping trends evolve, we remain dedicated to providing unique, immersive experiences prioritising sustainability and conservation."

Sustainability and community development have been central to the reserve's mission since its establishment in 2017.  It has successfully struck a balance between supporting conservation efforts and promoting sustainability while prioritising local communities' development. For instance, upon its establishment, the reserve carefully removed cattle from the land to facilitate the reintroduction of endemic wildlife, ensuring that the needs of affected communities were also considered.

Today, this reserve, encompassing 20,000 hectares, is a thriving haven for wildlife, now home to majestic lions, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos.

Regarding community development efforts, the reserve has created approximately 200 jobs for locals, making it the second-largest employer in the rural Ulundi district.  The reserve credits much of its  success to its community-centric approach.

Looking to the future, Babanango Game Reserve has ambitious plans to enhance its offerings. Upcoming developments include new activities, improved guest accommodations, and investments in renewable energy.

The reserve also aims to strengthen its partnerships with local communities, positively impacting hundreds of households in rural Zululand. By aligning its growth with conservation objectives, Babanango Game Reserve aspires to serve as a model for community-based natural resource management in South Africa.
