AAs the glamping industry booms globally, Sycro Distribution, a leading supplier in South Africa's hospitality sector, is crucial in providing innovative solutions. The company initially focused on high-quality hospitality equipment and has since expanded to include products tailored for the glamping and adventure markets. Sycro's services have been critical in meeting the evolving demands of a post-COVID tourism industry that increasingly caters for discerning local and international travellers.
Sycro Distribution, established in 1998, introduced a unique table lamp imported from Austria. "It was designed to replace wax candles, which often made a mess of tables and carpets," said company founder Michael Butz. The product's safety features made it ideal for use in tented camps and bomas, even coming in a version called Mosquito Stop. Over the years, the company has expanded its product range to cater to the broader hospitality industry, supplying everything from operating equipment to consumables. Butz's passion for finding solutions for the industry has led to their latest offerings: rechargeable and solar LED lamps and candles, which are perfect for glamping environments.
Reflecting on Sycro's challenges, he noted that the COVID-19 pandemic was a significant hurdle. "The hospitality industry was hit hardest by travel restrictions, and we barely survived," he said. Many businesses, especially in the tourism sector, either shut down or are still struggling to recover. Moreover, Butz acknowledged the impact of South Africa's Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBEE) laws. "I found it challenging as a newly established business built on passion and hard work, but I adapted by launching two other companies that achieved BBEE, Level 2 compliance," he clarified.
Discussing the growth of the glamping trend, he shared that while glamping in South Africa is still relatively new, it has made camping more accessible to a broader audience. “Traditional camping requires experience, specialised equipment, and trailer licensing, which can be barriers for many. Glamping has opened up the camping experience to the wider population,” he noted. While glamping may not be inexpensive, he pointed out that many establishments offer separate rates for local and international tourists, making it more affordable for the domestic market, particularly after COVID-19.
He emphasised that Sycro’s edge lies in its commitment to reliable service. "Service You Can Rely On—that's what we stand for," he insisted. He believes providing a "one-stop shop" with exceptional service has been critical to the company's success over the past 25 years. Butz lamented that many establishments have sacrificed service and quality in favour of lower prices, which, in his view, will hinder guest satisfaction in the long term.
Looking to the future, Butz expressed cautious optimism, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of global markets. “Shipping rates, exchange rates, and raw material availability can change overnight,” he explained. Despite these challenges, he remains committed to innovation and flexibility. “Planning is important, but you must be prepared to change direction at a moment’s notice,” he added.
As sustainability becomes an increasingly important issue in the tourism sector, he noted that Sycro is committed to sourcing affordable and robust products. "While many quality products are available, the weak Rand and high shipping costs make them expensive," he explained. He also highlighted an unfortunate trend: the mistreatment of equipment by both guests and staff in some local establishments. "It's disheartening to see how equipment is damaged or stolen, discouraging businesses from investing in quality products that could enhance the guest experience," he lamented.
