Imagine a surf-and-safari destination where exhilarating adventures await around every corner – whether it be at the Valley of Waves water park, in the entertainment centre, on two golf courses, at the casino, or in the 5-Star Palace of the Lost City Hotel.

Sun City is an award-winning entertainment complex, located in the heart of South Africa's North West Province, making it a dream destination for families and adventurers alike. But it’s not just a holiday resort, it's an oasis of adrenaline-pumping experiences waiting to be discovered.

As if it wasn’t committed enough, Sun City has committed to developing even more ‘green’ activities, making its operations more sustainable, and to embracing more environmentally friendly practices throughout the entire resort.

Sun City’s sustainable solar system

Sun City delights in many sunny days throughout the year – it’s in the name. This is the perfect opportunity for a world-class holiday resort and casino to meet its Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) and reduce its reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

As such, Sun City installed a grid-tied solar photovoltaic system rated at 1.4MW peak of installed capacity. The system, installed on the roof of the entertainment centre, is made up of 2 584 monocrystalline solar 550W PV modules. In this way, Sun City has included solar energy into its energy mix. So, it’s not just Sun City, it’s a city powered by the sun.

The solar system is expected to produce very high levels of renewable energy for at least nine months of the year. Its total capacity will reduce Sun City’s reliance on fossil-fuel energy by an estimated 2 367 571kWh each year. This is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 329 average-sized South African homes. This will see Sun City reduce its annual Carbon Dioxide equivalent emissions by over 2 510 metric tonnes annually, helping decrease its environmental footprint and mitigate climate change. It’s just another way the Sun International hotel complex is letting the sun shine on all the fun.

Being water wise

In its attempts to be more water-wise, Sun City supports various water-saving and recycling measures. The Sun City Waste Water Treatment Works monitors the water coming into the system and its uses across various activities. Its water monitoring system ensures there are no water leaks at the resort.

Due to the size of its operations, Sun City is not dependent on the local municipality for water treatment. Instead, it has its own wastewater treatment works. All the sewer water from the resort ends at the wastewater treatment plant, where it is recycled into grey water. The resort recycles close to 2 million litres of grey water daily, which it uses to irrigate its two golf courses.

Empowering Black, female-owned companies

As part of its local socio-economic development strategy, the entertainment centre and hotel resort strives to create long-term employment for the people living within its vicinity, while creating genuine value for the communities in which it operates.

Sun City has appointed CPKM Group, a Black, female-owned construction company, run by 31-year-old Charlotte Mosito, as part of its Sun Vacation Club expansion project. Alongside her team of 22 employees, the young female entrepreneur is taking this opportunity to flex her muscles, in what is largely a male-dominated industry.

The construction deal requires that around a third of the total build value must be allocated to local contractors. This means that a large number of construction workers will come from neighbouring Moses Kotane municipality.

Once completed, the project will accommodate 400 guests. As always, Sun City will largely source its new staff complement from the communities on its doorstep, to provide skills development and job opportunities to the people in the North West.

It clear that South Africa’s favourite resort is taking serious steps to reach its Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) along its sustainability journey to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
