YYear-round, the Elim wine route is battered by fierce winds from the Atlantic Ocean. But the vineyards thrive in the cool conditions and withstand the harsh environment. The soil, enriched by winter rainfall and coastal mists, produces flavour-rich, pea-sized grapes. The result is a delicious output of wines with a unique story behind them.
In the area, you’ll find an assortment of brave winemakers: Zoetendal Wine Farm on the banks of the scenic Nuwejaars River; Quoin Rock; the Berrio; the Black Oystercatcher; Strandveld Vineyards; and Lomond. These winemakers work alongside the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area, to help preserve endangered flora and fauna.
Farms on the Elim wine route are located close together, so it’s possible to explore them all in one day. There are lots of wine-tasting opportunities and superb restaurants along the way.
The wines in the Elim area are growing in popularity – proof that untamed terrain is well worth a leap of faith.

How to get here
From Cape Town, take the N2 to Bredasdorp before taking the R314 to Elim.
Best time to visit
From August to September, the Overberg’s canola fields, wild flowers, and vineyards are in bloom. It’s also when whales can be spotted from L’Agulhas, Struisbaai, and De Hoop.
Things to do
Stop in the old village of Elim and enjoy a walking tour. To admire the natural landscape, visit the nearby Heuningberg Nature Reserve.
What to pack
If you’re visiting in the winter months of June and July, bring along a warm jacket.
What to eat
Tuck into a delicious meal at the Black Oystercatcher, or a cheese platter at the Berrio.
