Meet South Africa

IIf you’re cruising the streets of Johannesburg on a Saturday morning and notice a little rumble in your stomach, then visit the Jozi Food Market for a medley of delectable products, all handmade with care in the local community. Expect to find everything from raw honey and flavourful, homemade sausages to preserves and decadent sweet treats. And that’s not to mention the home-brewed cordials and juices, and heavenly fresh-from-the-oven breads.

The Jozi Food Market is accessibly located on the grounds of a Johannesburg sports club, minutes from the well-known row of restaurants in the trendy northern suburb of Greenside. It’s an intimate market that you can work your way through in half an hour, if pushed; alternatively, take a morning to really taste and discover all the products with perhaps only one notch of the belt changed.

Did You Know?
TThe trendy village of nearby Parkhurst has many choice restaurants and cafés in one street – 4th Avenue.

TThe Jozi Food Market boasts quite a few standout stalls. Look for the honey table with its eco-friendly raw (unpasteurised) honey provided by a registered beekeeper. The homemade bacon table sells arguably the best pork pies in Johannesburg, and there is a jam stall with lemon curd that is beyond grandma’s best.

AAlso look for the table with refreshing cordials – organic and home-brewed – and ask to taste till you find your perfect blend. Then there is the bread stand with loaves bursting with seeds, grains and crusts that pack some serious crunch. Food markets in South Africa have become more than just shopping venues. Families, couples and foodies support them because they offer entertainment, good food and quality products in one spot.

At the Jozi Food Market, take the time to enjoy a breakfast of fresh coffee matched with a croissant, pain au chocolat or a Belgian waffle. After your extensive explorations, you’ll be needing lunch, so find the gourmet sandwich stand, the outfit that sells country pasties, or the chap with the pork pies.

There are a few fresh produce, books and crafts stalls, but this market is mainly about food, glorious food. It’s the ideal market to fill up your tummy for the day and your baskets for the weekend.
