HHusband and wife team Andre and Cheryl Nel have been developing a distinctive dining experience for their guests since opening the Hat and Creek restaurant in Hoedspruit, bordering the Kruger National Park. Here, diners can enjoy dishes such as a wild game platter, honey and soy tuna fillets, angry prawns, dressed sole or a range of fine steaks.

Just across the road from The Hat and Creek, Freddie and Brenda De Vries recently purchased Rumble Restaurant, formerly known as Cala La Pasta. The menu includes delicious pizzas and lots of authentic pasta dishes. Every meal at this Italian restaurant is freshly prepared, from the handmade tagliatelle and pizza bases to the subtle sauces.

Hoedspruit wouldn’t be Hoedspruit without Sleepers restaurant, located along the railway tracks at the town’s old station. Sleepers is known for its peri-peri sauce, gourmet burgers, pizzas and grills. The restaurant’s pub, The Puffing Billy, also has a loyal – and lively – client base. Three Bridges, about 15km out of Hoedspruit on the road to Phalaborwa, features a similar menu to Sleepers, with the added bonus of a beautiful view over the Olifants River.

Cooked the Kitchen on Route 40 offers regional delicacies, while Baobab Restaurant is famous for its savoury and sweet pancakes and the opportunity to embrace a baobab tree.

If you enjoy curry, you can pick up a takeaway at Kalimambo in the Kamogelo Tourism Centre. The delicious South Indian lamb, beef, chicken and vegetarian curries are flavoured with chilli, black pepper, cardamom, cloves, ginger and cinnamon. Its bunny chows (hollowed-out half-loafs of bread filled with curry) are among its most popular dishes.

There are also several coffee shops that serve breakfasts and lunches, including Hoedspruit Coffee Purveyors, the Fig and Bean Café and Anne’s Cotton Club Café, just a few kilometres out of town. In addition, the Safari Wine Club offers live music and wine tastings, and if you’re eating on the run.

Things to do

The town of Hoedspruit lies between the Blyde River Canyon and the Greater Kruger National Park. You can enjoy a range of wildlife, adventure and cultural experiences within a 50km radius of the town.

Restaurants in Hoedspruit host regular events, from live music shows to charity auctions. Most of Hoedspruit's restaurants have active Facebook pages where they profile upcoming events. If you can't find what you're looking for online, you can call the Limpopo Tourism Agency on +27 (0)15 293 3600.

What to pack

Depends on the time of year you visit. For summer months, lightweight cottons and linens and short-sleeved clothes are best, although a light jersey/jumper/sweater might be needed for the cooler evenings. Umbrellas and raincoats are also essential for summer and don't forget to pack your suntan lotion! Warmer clothes are needed in winter.

Where to stay

Hoedspruit is a gateway to the Greater Kruger National Park, with dozens of accommodation options to choose from in and around the town.

What to eat

With so many restaurants to choose from, it's hard to recommend particular dishes! Most of Hoedspruit's restaurants run 'chalkboard specials' on a regular basis. These dishes are often local specialities and well worth trying. The restaurant managers will also be happy to advise you on what to eat when you visit.
