Health-minded visitors to South Africa’s luxury game lodges are discovering that nothing quite beats a pampering session in the wild African bush. Just a few years ago, the idea of combining a Big 5 safari with an on-site spa treatment was unheard of, but our game lodge industry continues to reinvent itself – so now our bush spas lead the way in Africa, in terms of innovation.

Bush spas in South Africa offer a real treat and having a spa facility is now seen as an essential element to any decent luxury safari lodge. Certainly, the best lodges in the country all have magnificent spas to brag about, as well as some unique treatments. Most of them, set in magnificent natural surroundings, take the spa experience beyond simply soothing the body they pamper your mind and soul too.

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge in Mpumalanga province has the Amani Spa, which is known for its excellent hydrotherapy treatments and its tranquil Zen garden. The spa uses the Africology range of products inspired by South African indigenous plants such as rooibos, marula and the African potato.

Therapists at the spa at Singita Lebombo / Singita Sweni in the Lebombo concession of the Kruger National Park (in the southern section of the park, in Mpumalanga) use monkey oranges in a signature massage and also offer a sensual ‘Touch of Moonlight Therapy.

Garonga Safari Camp, just outside the northern Kruger National Park in Limpopo, embraces the concept of ‘Soul on Safari’, and the combination of game activities and delicious therapies in their outdoor sala is an absolute winner. Falaza Game Park and Spa in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, KwaZulu-Natal, has incorporated Zulu rituals into its spa offering.

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat in Western Cape’s Cederberg has taken its New-Age inspiration from the earth itself, offering guests the benefit of the ‘abundant, mystic healing energies’ in the Bushman’s Kloof, and numbering a Crystal Steam Room among its attractions.

Certainly, our South African bush spas have created novel ways of transforming the bush safari into an indulgence in unabashed self-care. Unless you’re Ernest Hemingway, we’ve no doubt you’ll approve…
