SSouth African casinos can be found on the fringes of most major centres. These opulent resorts will typically include hotels, restaurants and bars along with huge entertainment complexes. The emphasis is on being a one-stop leisure destination, with access to both indoor and outdoor entertainment.

In South Africa, casinos are often designed around a specific theme, offering a vision of life somewhat different from the run of the mill expectation of Africa. Nor are they typical casinos, most offering entertainment that goes beyond the usual slots and gaming tables.

Among the most popular casinos in South Africa is the famed Sun City complex, in the North West province. Sun City is as famous for its golf courses, game drives and water park as it is for gambling. The complex borders the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, home to the Big 5.  Recently refurbished and offering the latest smart-card technology, Sun City Casino has literally hundreds of slot machine and over 40 popular table games on offer.

By contrast, Gold Reef City, Montecasino and Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg, Gauteng, enjoy more urban locations and offer more in the way of nightlife and indoor activities to their patrons.

In Durban, the Sun Coast Casino has its own private beach in addition to the gaming offerings, and The Boardwalk Casino in Port Elizabeth is likewise situated a few minutes away from Blue Flag awarded Hobie Beach. The Wild Coast Sun Resort and Casino is set on 750ha of natural bush between the Mtamvuna and Mzamba Rivers, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Situated near King Shaka International Airport, this casino offers great sea views from the black jack and roulette tables.

Grand West Casino and Entertainment World in Cape Town is somewhat removed from the city but offers a unique indoor experience for the casino-goer in South Africa. Grand West is the largest entertainment destination of its kind in South Africa with a casino, selection of restaurants and bars, a theatre, children's activities and a nightclub.

Many South African casinos, though geared more toward the leisure traveller, also offer much to entice those travelling on business. Most of these casino complexes typically include at least one high-class hotel as well as conferencing facilities and business suites.

Casinos in South Africa are a rapidly growing tourist drawcard, offering global glitz and glamour alongside more traditional African tourist expectations.
