Cycling

CCape Town is one of the world’s top cities when it comes to urban cycling paths. In the city centre, as well as the suburbs, specially demarcated cycling lanes have been put in place to ensure that more residents and visitors can use this carbon-free means of travel.

Cycling is very fashionable in the eco-friendly city of Cape Town, with many residents using dedicated cycling lanes for daily transport needs. Almost all the city’s major attractions are accessible along bicycle lanes, making it possible to combine exercise and sightseeing.

In addition to all the cycle paths in the city centre, visitors can now cycle out to Milnerton along the MyCiti Cycle Route. This 8km ride, which ends at Woodbridge Island, is highly recommended.

A number of bicycle rental outlets offer short-term and long-term rentals. Various cycling tours are also offered for those wanting some local guidance.

Cape Town is amazingly clean, with far less pollution than most major cities around the world. The lack of traffic and high-rise buildings also allows for a more relaxing urban cycling experience. In addition, it’s comparatively safe, although bicycles should always be chained up if left unattended in public areas.

Bike & Saddle are just one of the tour operators who offer urban cycling tours of Cape Town. Tour guides, fluent in English, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese, take guests on a journey to city attractions such as the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point, Cape Town Stadium, the Bo Kaap, City Hall, Adderley Street and The Company’s Garden. These tours are suitable for anyone of basic fitness levels and cycling experience.

Best time to visit

The summer months (October to April) offer longer evenings for cyclists, as well as drier weather in general.

What will it cost?

Bicycles can be rented from approximately R350 per day. Guided tours cost a little extra, but the local knowledge make it worthwhile.

What to pack

If you’re cycling during summer, don’t underestimate the amount of water you’ll need to rehydrate. For a 2-hour cycle you will need 2l to 4l of water per person. And don't forget the sunscreen.

What's happening?

The Cape Town Cycle Tour takes place in March every year.
