FFounded in 2012, Dlala Nje Tours is the brain child of Nicholas Bauer and Mike Lupak. It is run from the infamous Ponte Towers in Yeoville. The proceeds of the tours go to the upliftment of the community in Yeoville.
The centrepiece of the Yeoville Tour is the massive Ponte City, which dominates the Johannesburg skyline. The cylindrical apartment block has been privy to a number of stories. A number of movies have been filmed in its awe-inspiring core, including the latest Resident Evil and Chappie. Some of the factual stories, however, are even better than the fictitious ones.
TToday Ponte is once again an apartment building, and Dlala Nje Tours operates from a penthouse on the 50th floor with passionate tour guides eager to change the perceptions of both Ponte and its surrounding suburbs. The children of Ponte are the main focus of Dlala Nje, which in isiZulu means "let's play". Education, art and sport are some of the subjects of community upliftment plans designed to provide a better future for the residents.
Djala Nje Yeoville Tours
MMandela himself spent time in Yeoville in the 1960s when he was on the run from the police. The area was then a place of understanding and freedom, with both white and black people living together despite the country’s prevailing apartheid laws. He found refuge in the flat of one of his white comrades in Webb Street, although the exact address has been lost to time.
Dlala Nje offers two main tours, one on Saturday afternoons and one on Sunday evenings. Both will enthral you with a world of culture, history, struggle and hope.
