IIf you are staying at the Gooderson Drakensberg Gardens Golf and Spa Resort, a round of 18 at Drakensberg Gardens Golf Club is serious value for money, given the scenery and the quality of the fairways and greens.
The rough is definitely to be avoided, but the generous width of the fairways offers hackers a fair chance of doing this. Several strategic water traps throughout the course force golfers to make some tough decisions about whether to back themselves and go for glory, or play it safe and set up for a wedge onto the green.
Numerous hole-in-ones have been recorded on holes 3 and 11, so have your credit card ready to buy a few rounds if you’re feeling lucky.
The signature hole is definitely the scenic 6th, which requires a bit of a walk to the tee box – but don’t worry, it’s worth it. If you are playing on a sunny day, get your partner to watch your drive from this tee, as you are likely to lose the ball as it soars above the mountains in the backdrop.
While on the course, you are likely to encounter wildlife such as eland, baboons and various smaller species of antelope. The birdlife in this region is plentiful, adding to the peaceful atmosphere.
Golf carts can be hired and are particularly useful on the front 9 if you’re a bit under the weather for whatever reason. Speaking of which, there are some great sports bars at the hotel on the premises, perfect for making a lads weekend of it.
Gooderson Drakensberg Gardens is also a great family resort, with various activities to keep kids entertained during the day, such as a BMX course, fly-fishing lessons, horse riding and guided hikes.
If you happen to fall in love with this part of the world, there are a number of luxury timeshare options for you to consider.
