Bush Retreats

In South Africa, bush spas are a unique concept that combine the safari experience with a range of pampering treatments such as massages, facials, pedicures and alternative therapies. Our discerning health-minded visitors are discovering that nothing quite beats a pamper session in the wild African bush.

SSingita Lebombo runs a school of cooking to develop employment opportunities for local youth.

IIn South Africa, bush spas now form an essential part of the luxury game lodge experience.

Just a few years ago, the idea of combining a Big Five safari with an on-site spa treatment was unheard of, but because the game lodge industry continues to reinvent itself, our renowned bush spas lead the way in terms of health and wellness tourism innovation on the continent.

BBush spas in South Africa offer a real treat for the discerning traveller and having a spa facility is now seen as an essential element to any decent luxury safari game lodge experience. Certainly, the best lodges in the country all have magnificent spas to brag about as well as some very unique pamper concepts.

Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge has the Amani Spa which is known for its excellent hydrotherapy treatments and its tranquil zen garden. The spa also uses the Africology range of products - inspired by South African indigenous plants such as rooibos, marula and the African potato.

Shibula Game Lodge & Spa in the Waterberg uses apricot kernels in some of its therapies and is known for the very specific African Back Wood Massage therapy.

Therapists at the spa at Singita Lebombo and Singita Sweni in the Lebombo concession of the Kruger National Park use monkey oranges in a signature massage and also offer up a sensual ‘Touch of Moonlight Therapy'.

Kievits Kroon, a 16 hectare upmarket country estate in Pretoria, Gauteng, offers pampering, relaxation and rejuvenation in their spacious and luxurious Spa.

Garonga safari camp is still touting their concept of ‘Soul on Safari' and the combination of game activities and delicious therapies in the outdoor sala is an absolute winner.

Falaza Game Park and Spa in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi has incorporated zulu rituals into its spa offering and Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat in the Cederberg have taken their inspiration from the earth itself.

Certainly, our South African bush spas have created novel ways of transforming the bush safari into a pampering experience. Roughing it has never been so decadent!

    Patricia Chiloane: Serurubele Boutique Hotel
Patricia Chiloane is a passionate and dedicated ambassador of Mpumalanga province. She is a descendant of landowners, who have lived in the area of Bushbuckridge for generations. When she initially conceptualised Serurubele Boutique Hotel, the MBA graduate’s goal was to create a tourism ecosystem to benefit everyone in the small town. Her other goal was to elevate Bushbuckridge on the tourism map. The land on which Serurubele Boutique Hotel is built has been in her family for four generations. The hotel’s name, Serurubele, is derived from the SeSotho word for butterfly, the small insect that is endemic to the Lowveld. As visitors walk through the hotel, they are immersed in the story of the region. The hotel’s 16 luxury rooms are punctuated with pictures of the Lowveld butterflies, paying homage to the natural splendour of the area.

Mpho Molema: The Workshop ko Kasi, Northern Cape
Despite its scenic landscape and being home to the Eye of Kuruman (a wondrous natural spring known as one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere), Kuruman in the Northern Cape is not often the first place that one thinks of when we speak about tourism in South Africa. Mpho Molema, a native of Mothibistad township in Kuruman, defies this status quo through The Workshop ko Kasi”, an eco-tourism and creative hub offering authentic African experiences to visitors from all over the world.
