EEnjoy some authentic Karoo experiences when you hike the Green Flag accredited Karoo Erdvark Trail in the Western Cape. It's a trail with different routes for hikers of various fitness levels, situated far from the urbanised world and all the creature comforts that come with it.
The Karoo Erdvark Trail lies about 80km from Beaufort West, in the Western Cape's Nuweland Mountains. This Green Flag accredited hiking trail is located on a working sheep farm, offering a variety of hiking terrain.
Hiking options are a mix of several 1-day circular hikes, up to a 7-day hiking trail, and all come with the option of having your luggage carried. Accommodation options include a traditional Karoo farmhouse, mountain chalet or shed, or you can pitch a tent under the stars. All come with basic amenities.
The first of the circular trails, Tafelkop, is 13.3km and will take you between 6 and 8 hours to complete. The sections then get shorter, allowing you to spend more time enjoying the scenery. The Aar trail is about 9km, requiring around 5 hours of hiking. Piekniekval is 6.2km, while the Bulhoek trail is just 5.8km, allowing a leisurely conclusion to your adventure.
The Karoo Erdvark Trail has received rave reviews for its incredible views of flat-topped koppies and wide-open plains and because it's accessible to all levels of hikers.
