TThe Montecasino Teatro opened its doors with an enthralling production of Disney’s The Lion King in May 2007. Since then, this Johannesburg theatre has welcomed over 2-million patrons and established a reputation as a significant contributor to the theatrical arts in South Africa.

The Teatro is helping to grow theatre audiences in the country with productions that include musicals, ballet, comedy shows, ice shows, opera and more. Many of the productions cannot be seen anywhere else in Africa.

The Teatro has hosted top international productions such as Grease, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, Cats, Dreamgirls, High School Musical, Riverdance, Lord of the Dance, Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera, Sunset Boulevard, The Imperial Ice Stars’ Nutcracker on Ice, Swan Lake on Ice and Peter Pan on Ice. The Teatro has also hosted some of South Africa’s top theatre producers including Pieter Toerien, Hazel Feldman and Big Concerts.

The theatre can accommodate over 1 800 people at full capacity, making it the largest theatre in the country. While many of the productions staged at the Teatro have had 100% South African casts, other performers have come from as far afield as Russia, the United Kingdom, India, China, Australia, Ireland, Portugal and the United States of America.

The many awards its cast and production teams win at the annual South African Naledi Theatre Awards, including accolades for set design, lighting design and sound design, underscore the Teatro's reputation.

Along with its great shows, the Teatro's location within the Montecasino complex, with its shops, hotels, restaurants, bars, casino, cinemas, clubs and live events, make this Johannesburg theatre a 'one-stop' shop for people looking for entertainment in the city.
