SSince they first hit South African shores, the Segway transporter has held a fascination for the young and the young-at-heart. Take a tour of Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on this unique mode of transport when you visit KwaZulu-Natal, you’ll be able to tick 2 boxes on your to-do list at once.
Within minutes of stepping onto a Segway, you’ll develop an intuitive feel of how to operate it. With proper training and a little practice, you’ll soon be riding like a pro (a short training session of about 8 minutes is included in the tour). Although mastery of a Segway is fairly simple, for safety reasons children under 10 are not permitted to ride.
Experienced and knowledgeable tour guides lead the way, as riders effortlessly glide to every corner of the stadium. Guides share interesting and historic facts about the city of Durban, the stadium, and the Skycar above the stadium, which is also well worth taking a ride on.
A choice of tours ranges from short 45-minute glides around the stadium or along the beachfront, to 2-hour rides along the promenade to uShaka Marine World – plus a couple of combination options that offer the best of both worlds. Booking is essential and tours are weather-dependent.
You don’t have to be fit to ride a Segway, although ideally riders should weigh between 45kg and 117kg. Since you will be standing during the 2-hour demo and tour, you must be comfortable doing so. Riding also entails constantly shifting from front to back and side-to-side, with knees slightly bent. It’s advisable to wear sunblock, sunglasses and trainers. Helmets are provided.
You can also do Segway tours at other South African destinations, including Sun City in North West province and Spier Wine Estate near Cape Town in Western Cape.
