OOver 3 decades ago, a group of parents from the Michael Mount Waldorf School in Bryanston, Johannesburg, started selling organic produce to one another from their car boots.
Little did they know that from those early beginnings would grow the Bryanston Organic and Natural Market, now a Johannesburg institution that draws large crowds every Thursday and Saturday morning.
So is this Johannesburg market only about organic produce? No, it's also a place where handmade arts and crafts, clothes, curios, jewellery, pottery, toys and much more are on display.
Let's take a stroll along the paved walkways among the red-roofed stalls of the market. At the entrance on your left is a stall selling herb and vegetable plants; opposite is one specialising in carved wooden goods.
As you walk deeper into the market, you'll find beautifully designed clothes, from classy coats and silk scarves to classic blouses and chic skirts, all made from organic materials.
Here's a stall selling leather belts and handmade shoes; there's one with hand-turned wooden beads. Another sells duck feather down pillows and comforters and yet another sells locally designed jewellery.
Further on are the food and produce stalls. Buy organic vegetables and fruit, free-range chicken and stoneground flour. Or how about a delicious lemon meringue pie, organic dairy cream or some homemade pasta or bread?
Still more stalls await. Pick up some exclusive pottery, marvel at the local beadwork or buy an old-fashioned wooden rocking horse, complete with stirrups and saddle.
You'll need some refreshment after all this retail therapy, so it's off to the centre court, where you can choose from fresh sandwiches, quiches, cakes, muffins, fruit juices and organic coffee. As you tuck in at your wooden table, you'll be entertained by live music from a variety of musicians, from Irish folk groups to traditional jazz bands.
