EEver wanted to do a walking safari in the Kruger National Park? The Outpost, a designer eco-lodge famed for its contemporary African bush architecture and wooden walkways linking the buildings, offers wonderful walking safaris.
The walks take you deep into the wild heart of the Kruger National Park, to the Makuleke concession, which lies between the Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers. To the north is Pafuri, home to baobabs, ancient royal settlements and huge herds of elephants. To the south is Crook's Corner, on the border of South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe, a famous escape route for thieves during the gold rush days.
Round up your friends and head for a close encounter with the African wilderness. Wake at sunrise and head out to explore the surrounding area, which includes open bushveld, rocky outcrops, indigenous forests and thickets of baobabs. Enjoy an African style bush picnic at lunchtime, set under a shady grove of trees.
The walks are both educational and soulful. Walking on foot through the bush, you are closer to the rhythms of nature, closer to its sounds and smells. Your guide will explain things as you walk, point out interesting trees and animals, telling you about the ancient lore of the African bush and its creatures.
You will be back at the Outpost overlooking the Luvuvhu River in time for sundowners. The main building is set against a dramatic hillside, and wooden walkways lead to the different chalets.
Each chalet is designed for maximum privacy and comfort. The rooms are spacious, the beds enormous and, instead of walls, there are retractable remote-controlled screens that slide back so you can get a glorious view of the bush and river. The Outpost also serves excellent fusion cuisine and a sophisticated variety of South African and imported wines.
