IIn the heart of Drakenstein Municipality, sustainability finds new momentum in the works of local business, Lilly Loompa. This black, female-owned small business specialises in creating upcycled homeware products from 100% waste. By reworking various forms of waste, including glass, plastic, tin, and wood, Lilly Loompa not only gives new life to discarded materials but also promotes a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Based in Paarl, Lilly Loompa has become a symbol of hope within its community. "Starting from humble beginnings, we have made a positive environmental impact and created local jobs," says founder of Lilly Loompa, Lizl Naude.

The small family-run business has big plans for the future, aiming to establish a regional upcycling hub in Paarl. This envisioned space will serve as a dedicated area for universities, sustainable programmes, and waste upcycling businesses to collaboratively develop reusable raw materials.

The vision of creating an upcycling hub highlights the potential for innovation and collaboration within the sustainability sector. By providing a platform for local entrepreneurs and organisations, Lilly Loompa aims to drive awareness for waste reduction and the value of upcycled products.

Through workshops and community engagement initiatives, Lilly Loompa is also dedicated to educating the public about the benefits of upcycling. "We believe that by showcasing what can be done with waste, we can inspire others to think creatively and take action," says Naude. “These efforts are crucial in fostering a sense of responsibility towards waste management and sustainability within the community.”

TThe products offered by Lilly Loompa range from storage containers to lamps, décor, and small furniture. Each item is not only a testament to the creativity and skill of the artisans involved but also a conversation starter about the importance of sustainable living. By choosing to invest in upcycled products, consumers can make a tangible difference in reducing their ecological footprint.

Moreover, Lilly Loompa’s commitment to sustainability aligns with Drakenstein Municipality’s broader goals of promoting eco-friendly practices. The municipality’s support for local businesses like Lilly Loompa is evident in its initiatives to empower entrepreneurs through training and resources, creating a thriving environment for sustainable enterprises.

The impact of Lilly Loompa extends beyond just environmental benefits; it also plays a crucial role in economic development. By creating jobs and supporting local artisans, the business contributes to the socio-economic upliftment of the community. "Our goal is to not only be a sustainable business but also to be a force for good in our community," emphasises Naude.

As Lilly Loompa continues to shine a bright light through growth and innovation, it stands as a shining example of how small businesses can lead the charge towards a more sustainable future. By transforming trash into treasure, Lilly Loompa inspires others to embrace a sustainability life, making a positive impact on the environment and the community in the process.
