Eastern Cape

TThere is a wide choice of venues for weddings in the Eastern Cape, including cities, historic towns, beaches, Karoo farms and stunning natural landscapes.

Wedding destinations in the Eastern Cape include the seaside cities of Port Elizabeth and East London. Both are known for their relaxed, friendly vibe but offer all the amenities of a busy metropolis. In Port Elizabeth, couples can choose between 4- and 5-star hotels like the Paxton, the Beach Hotel and King’s Tide Boutique Hotel, with their beautiful views of the Indian Ocean.

For an all-inclusive event, the Plantation (situated in Port Elizabeth’s coastal milkwood forest) is a popular wedding venue with a chapel, ballroom, bridal suite and 4-star accommodation. On the outskirts of the Friendly City, La Cigale Country Estate provides a pretty country wedding setting in a large indigenous garden.

In East London, historic Gonubie Manor, built in the 1800s, has romance written all over it, while the Blue Lagoon Hotel and Conference Centre, located at the Nahoon River estuary, is just a short walk from the beach.

Options for weddings in the Eastern Cape stretch further afield than the urban centres. Coastal towns such as Jeffrey’s Bay, Port Alfred and Cape St Francis are all extremely popular destinations. You can get married on one of the beautiful beaches or at lifestyle and golf estates such the St Francis Links in St Francis Bay.

Another golf estate that offers wedding facilities is the Bushman Sands Golf Lodge & Estate, close to Alice in the Greater Addo area. Also in the Addo area are a number of private game reserves that offer bush wedding venues. Award-winning lodges like Shamwari are exclusive, malaria-free and offer spectacular game viewing.

Other options for weddings in the Eastern Cape include towns such as Graaff-Reinet and Nieu Bethesda in the heart of the Karoo. They are charming, intimate wedding destinations with historic churches and atmospheric reception venues on farms or in town.

How to get here

Port Elizabeth and East London have airports with regular flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg. Alternatively, the Eastern Cape is very accessible via road.

Best time to visit

The Eastern Cape has dry winters and wet summers. As the weather is quite unpredictable during the summer months (November to February), spring (September, October) is a good time to plan a wedding. Winters can be pretty chilly, especially in the interior.

Things to do

The Eastern Cape is a very large province, so it's a good idea to plan your excursions and activities quite carefully. The Addo Elephant National Park is a major attraction, while adventure sports are also popular in this part of the world. Other attractions include the Red Location Museum in Port Elizabeth, the East London Museum, the Valley of Desolation in Graaf-Reinet, the historic town of Grahamstown and the Owl House in Nieu Bethesda.

Where to stay

Most wedding venues will have rooms for your guests or will advise on where your guests can stay.
