SSouth Africa's coastline varies from subtropical to desert and offers some of the most spectacular natural beauty and biodiverse environments in the world. The country's coast stretches for nearly 2 800km and visitors can find everything from adventure sports and excitement to natural reserves and tranquillity, with facilities and accommodation to rival the best in the world.
The eastern seaboard is warm, with temperatures averaging between 20 to 25 degrees Celsius; the western seaboard is cold with average temperatures of 9 to 14 degrees Celsius and the southern temperatures are 16 to 21 degrees Celsius.
South Africa's coasts are diverse. In the east, visitors can bask in the eternal summer of KwaZulu-Natal's subtropical Dolphin Coast, Golden Mile and South Coast. Activities range from game viewing to deep-sea fishing, from golf to snorkelling and everything in between. Excellent shopping at uShaka Marine World, fantastic hiking and scuba diving are some of the activities on offer.
The coastal areas of the Eastern Cape offer fantastic natural beauty and a wide range of recreational activities. The rich natural environment of the Sunshine Coast, close to the city of East London, can be explored on hiking trails or big game safaris. It is also a premier location for water sports with fantastic beaches and great golf.
The Wild Coast, as its name suggests, is more untamed than the Sunshine Coast. This unspoiled tract of land and ocean is renowned for its incredible beauty. It can be explored on horseback or by hiking trail with exceptional diving and fishing on offer.
The West Coast of South Africa is a world apart from the country's eastern coastline in climate, but offers the same excellent range of activities and accommodation. Picturesque fishing villages renowned for their hospitality and amazing seafood, hiking, golf, whale watching and the amazing phenomenon of vast carpets of spring flowers and ancient San (also known as Bushmen) cave paintings all add to the charm.
Further north sits the alluring and largely undiscovered and romantic Diamond Coast. Diamond miners and adventurers have found their way to this naturally blessed area throughout history. As its name implies this stretch of coast is famed for its diamonds and visitors can experience mining first hand. Rich plant life, gorgeous Namaqualand spring flowers and incredible shipwrecks add to this dramatic coastline's appeal.
South Africa's coastline offer visitors an unforgettable experience and certainly merits more than one visit - ask any South African.
