IIn South Africa, spiritual retreats can be found in many beautiful places that are ideal for getting in touch with your roots. There’s the Buddhist Retreat in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, the Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge in Limpopo and Temenos Retreat Centre in scenic McGregor, a small village in the mountains of the Western Cape,  roughly 150 km east of Cape Town ... and so many more.

Spiritual retreats are gaining in popularity in South Africa. As we enter an age that is becoming less materialistic and more soul-searching, there is a need for places where one can contemplate life, its meaning and our place in the bigger picture. When it comes to tourism around the world, soul-seeking spiritual journeys are becoming a huge drawcard.

In South Africa, spiritual retreats are available in beautiful destinations and combine comfortable accommodation with alternative therapies, meditation, wellbeing workshops, spiritual guidance and the opportunity to get up close and personal with nature. The wonderful thing is that retreats, whilst spiritually-based, are not religion-specific, and so anyone and everyone is welcome, no matter what faith you belong to.

The Buddhist Retreat Centre is well known among those wanting to contemplate life itself. Their silent retreats are a challenge for busy minds – but people keep going back for more. In a similar vein is the Emoyeni Retreat Centre in Rustenburg (near the scenic Magaliesberg), which also offers weekend retreats and simple Buddhist teachings as part of the package.

Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge in Limpopo combines time spent in nature with some alternative healing therapies such as cranio-sacral therapy (which helps one shift negative energy).

The Temenos Retreat Centre in the farming community of McGregor hosts wonderful wellness therapies, meditations in gorgeous gardens and the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people on wellness weekends.

And that's just for starters; wherever you go in the country there will be an opportunity to consider spirituality, meditate on the moment and be at one with nature at a South African spiritual retreat.
