SSouth Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province is a dream for travellers with a passion for the outdoors. The province is located within the north-east section of the country and is the home of South Africa’s Zulu Kingdom. It’s also home to the Drakensberg mountains, Battlefields, Midlands and also offers one of the best safari experiences in the country.
Travellers would traditionally base themselves in Durban for a day or two before driving through the province. Durban is South Africa’s third largest city and is a melting pot of cultures. There are strong Indian influences here and the city has the largest population of people of Indian descent outside of India. This region has long been famous for the most flavourful curries in South Africa, and more particularly bunny chow – a hollowed half loaf of bread filled with curry made from local spices!

TThe Midlands is located approximately 90 minutes’ drive from Durban and is a characterful section of KwaZulu-Natal filled with undeniable beauty, quirky coffee shops and art galleries. It was in this section of the country where Nelson Mandela was captured in 1962 before commencing a 27 year prison sentence. The Nelson Mandela Capture Site now has a famous sculpture of Nelson Mandela and a visitors centre which is a tribute to the former statesman.

TThe Drakensberg is arguably South Africa’s most scenic mountain range and thrill-seekers are spoilt for choice when it comes to the amount of activities on offer. There are plenty of hiking trails and travellers can also do zip-lining, canoeing, horse-back riding, white water rafting and abseiling. There are a range of accommodation options within the Drakensberg and the area also lends itself to leisurely walks, birding and fishing.

TThe Battlefields are must-do when visiting the province, and is particularly well known as the sites of the Anglo-Zulu and Ango-Boer wars. Take an afternoon tour of the Isandlwala battlefield where the Zulus scored one of his most famous victories, then tour Rorke’s Drift battlefield the next morning. Tours take about three hours and are guided by passionate local historians who roll back the centuries with vivid storytelling and expert knowledge.
There are also a range of safari options within KwaZulu Natal. Phinda and Thanda are private Big Five game reserves and Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park is a great choice for more independent travellers. iSimangaliso Wetland Park was South Africa’s first World Heritage Site. It has three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems and is a marine protected area home to some of South Africa’s best birdlife.
