TThe rhythmic ticking of wheels along a track, great billowing clouds of steam, the train whistle howling. If you have ever wanted to experience an adventure by a steam locomotive, then this day trip from Joburg to Magaliesburg and back again will charm you with the romance of days gone by.
There’s a reason train outings are so loved. From the moment you stand on the platform to the end of the day when you head back to the station through the setting sun, you’re in for an unforgettable rail adventure.
The Magaliesburg Express is one of five historic steam locomotives operated by Reef Steamers, a voluntary group of rail enthusiasts.
TThe journey starts as soon as you get there. After a briefing, step aboard and watch the age-old process of preparation, from the coal trimming to firing, ash-pan cleaning, and lubrication.
EEn route, take note of the wheel tapper at work. You can also open the windows, or stand in the passage and lean out to feel the smoke billowing from the chimney and watch the clouds of steam pumping from the train’s pistons.
Prefer a more leisurely experience? Head to the bar coach, sit back and watch the countryside from a comfy sofa with a drink in hand. Half way there, you’ll stop at the original Krugersdorp Station, built in 1896. The next stop is Magaliesburg.
This is a wonderful way to experience the town. Over the next four hours you can explore the craft shops, take a swim, and enjoy a picnic or lunch at one of the country restaurants.
On the way back, let the rhythmic sounds of the train engine lull you to sleep, or sit back and watch the countryside steam by.
