Overview
TThe Eastern Free State is known for incredible fossil findings that date back to the early dinosaur age and there are a few specialised operators offering fossil hunting expeditions. You may not discover remnants of a 210-million-year-old dinosaur (actually discovered in the Ladybrand district of the Free State), but there is no doubt you’ll have great fun trying. Head to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State for more thrilling expeditions and take in the incredible scenery, sandstone cliffs and ancient geology. Delegates will be amazed to learn that primitive tools, dinosaur fossils, and fossilised footprints have been unearthed here, and in 1973, dinosaur eggs were discovered in Rooi Draai, in the Free State, dating back 190 million years.
