MMaboneng is a thriving inner-city district of Johannesburg. Revamped in 2008, the collection of old buildings was given new life by Jonathan Liebmann who recognized the potential for a thriving arts and culture destination. Many of the buildings date back to the 1900’s and are today used to house trendy restaurants and a thriving nightlife.

Staying in Maboneng is not only easy but fun as well. There are a variety of different hotels, ranging from the boutique to the extravagant.

Hallmark House is probably the main hotel in the district. The apartment style hotel has 46 rooms with a separate concierge service. Air con, WiFi and flat screen TV’s are standard and one can get a great meal at the in-house restaurant from 06h00 to 22h30.

Happy Guest is at the other end of the spectrum from Hallmark House. This self-catering option is based in Fox Street and offers a funky apartment vibe with a living room and master bedroom. Meals can be prepared in the kitchenette, or you can take advantage of one of the nearby trendy restaurants.

12 Decades Hotel is an arty little place with only 12 rooms, each one depicting a decade in Johannesburg’s history. The rooms have all been designed by contemporary artists and designers with great detail in the features. Choose from stark to opulent according to the decade you want to stay in.

Take a pasta class. This is one of the more off the wall activities that you can do in Maboneng and is quite popular, so be sure to book ahead. Learn the magical art of pasta making at the Johannesburg culinary and pastry school on Fox street. Spend a delightful evening up to your elbows in egg and flour and eat your creations afterwards.

Did You Know?

Johannesburg was founded in 1886 making it one of the youngest major cities in the world.

The Living Room is one of the most popular eateries in Maboneng. This quaint little restaurant is on a  rooftop with magnificent views of the surrounding city. Plants are the main focus here, with hundreds of specimens creating a fragrant and forest-like atmosphere. The food is light and trendy with items such as tiny beef burgers and tapas.

The Way is a bar and grill which specialises in meat dishes. Sink your teeth into plates of boerewors and chops or a juicy burger to go with the unique cocktails and craft beer. Live entertainment is often on offer, as are sports games on the big screen TVs.

The Blackanese is a quaint little fusion sushi restaurant specialising in a mix of African and Asian cuisines. Tuck into a plate of biltong sushi or say for the famous fresh fish and prawn braai on the weekends.
