SSouth Africa's breathtaking landscapes and vibrant cities have captivated the world. Yet, it's the nation's extraordinary people who truly embody the country's soul. As global icons like Thebe Magugu, and Thuso Mbedu make waves internationally, from chart-topping hits to revolutionary fashion designs and highly acclaimed acting performances, their hometowns continue to reflect the rich cultural tapestry that nurtured their passions.
Unravel the roots of Thebe Magugu's designs in Kimberley
From watching international fashion TV shows in his mother's living room in Kimberley’s Ipopeng township to becoming the first African designer to win the prestigious LVMH Prize, Thebe Magugu's journey from Kimberley, in the Northern Cape Province to global fashion acclaim is as multifaceted as the diamonds that made his hometown famous. The designer's self-titled collections consistently draw inspiration from his roots in this historic mining city, where creativity flourished against an unlikely backdrop.
He uses his work to showcase the beautiful side of how he grew up and tell the story of the small town he hails from. Transforming everyday elements of his childhood – from his grandmother's kitchen tablecloth to the corrugated-iron roofs of Ipopeng (which means "to beautify oneself" in Setswana, a language of the Tswana people spoken across southern Africa) – into sophisticated fashion statements that have captured international attention.
While his roots lie in Kimberley, Magugu has also made his mark in Johannesburg's thriving fashion scene through Magugu House – which was named in Times Magazine’s Greatest Places to Visit in 2024. Magugu House - his first physical store and showroom, housed in a 1930s heritage building - includes two micro galleries and showcases his colourful storytelling through fashion and art.
Explore Magugu’s hometown:
- Step into history at The Big Hole, where the world's largest hand-dug excavation tells the story of the diamond discovery that put Kimberley on the map. The site offers visitors a glimpse into the industrial heritage that forms the backdrop of Magugu's childhood, complete with a viewing platform suspended over the massive crater.
- Visit the William Humphreys Art Gallery, whose collection of South African art echoes Magugu's dedication to preserving and celebrating local cultural heritage. The gallery's mix of traditional and contemporary works mirrors Magugu's approach to blending cultural themes with modern design.
“I want my clothes to be modern relics for the stories of South Africa,” Magugu told AnOther Magazine. And South Africa – where he lives and works – is reflected in every facet of what he creates.
Trace Thuso Mbedu's path from Sleepy Hollow to Hollywood
Hollywood star Thuso Mbedu, fresh from her role in "Mufasa – The Lion King", carries the spirit of KwaZulu-Natal province where she goes. Born and raised in what locals affectionately call the "Sleepy Hollow," Pietermaritzburg shaped her journey from modest beginnings to international acclaim.
After her breakout role in the American drama miniseries, "The Underground Railroad" and the critically acclaimed blockbuster movie "The Woman King," Mbedu recently lent her voice to "Mufasa: The Lion King" alongside a star-studded cast including Beyoncé and veteran South African actor John Kani.
Mbedu is now set to lead the cast of the star-studded movie, "Children of Blood and Bone," which will be shot in South Africa. Reflecting on her journey, Mbedu has shared that Pietermaritzburg is where she was born and raised and discovered her love for acting. It is in the 'Sleepy Hollow' that she decided that she was going to be different.
Explore these must-see spaces in Mbedu’s‘hometown’:
- Visit the Natal Museum and Tatham Art Gallery, institutions that showcase the diverse narratives of the region. The Gandhi Statue is a reminder of the profound historical moments that have unfolded in this city, much like the powerful stories Mbedu now brings to global screens.
- Between Mbedu's hometown of Pietermaritzburg and the bustling metropolis of Durban lies one of South Africa's most breathtaking treasures – the Valley of 1 000 Hills. Named for its endlessly folding hills that stretch as far as the eye can see, this magnificent region is formed by the meeting of the Umgeni and Msunduzi rivers. The Umgeni has carved a spectacular gorge that offers visitors far more than just photo opportunities - it's where the untainted beauty of Africa comes alive.
Mbedu's connection to Johannesburg, or as she lovingly calls it - "Joburg," "Jozi," or "eGoli," also remains strong. "My lips and eyes were crusty, my outfit dusted, my armpits banging, but nothing was as loud as my spirit because I was finally home!" she told Elle about returning to South Africa for The Woman King movie premiere.
A nation of stories waiting to be discovered
From Thebe’s historic mining city, and Thuso's vibrant KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is a land of diversity. With nine provinces each with its own specular features, offers visitors a chance to experience the places that have inspired global excellence.
