BBack in 2004 the Soweto Wine & Lifestyle Festival was just an idea between friends, but fast-forward 11 years and it has grown to a massive, annual must-attend event on the South African wine calendar. This year the festival will run from 4-6 September to coincide with Tourism Month and Heritage Month, also celebrated in September.

More than 10 000 visitors, as well as top South African wineries, tourism stakeholders, lifestyle brands and corporate exhibitors, are expected to attend the festival. The initial idea behind the Soweto Wine & Lifestyle Festival was to introduce wine to new consumers, but it has grown way beyond expectation. In accord with festival tradition, visitors will learn more about wine through wine and food pairing with celebrity chefs, but can also expect fashion, information on local travel destinations, showcasing of local cuisine and so much more.

With the goal of becoming Africa’s leading wine, culture and lifestyle event, this year Festival organisers will launch their digital campaign using the hashtag #72hrsSoweto. The campaign will involve top local influencers’ experience of Soweto over three days. During this time they will meet the locals, explore street art, fashion and theatre in Soweto, and showcase the best of what the township has to offer.

“This year we introduce a new format to the Festival that will increase the event’s capacity to create a multi-tiered platform for visitors, wineries, food, travel and lifestyle brands.

“We are able to host more guests than ever before and we are opening VIP ticket sales for the first time, and we are introducing the new #72hrsSoweto digital campaign, so brands looking to present their wares to an exclusive audience are able to make optimal use of the Festival’s many stages,” says festival co-founder Marilyn Cooper.
